The National Weather Service confirmed three tornadoes had hit Benton and Madison counties causing extensive damage in the early morning hours of Sunday, May 26, 2024. The strongest of the tornadoes were rated EF3, which has maximum wind speeds of 136 to 165 mph.

She was fortunate to be out of town during the storm, attending her nephew's graduation from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. "The people I was visiting knew I had to change my airline. I got home on Sunday instead of Monday. I saw a lot of equipment out here, two big caterpillar. moving trees, 12 big trees [that went down]," said Hungate. "I don't leave town for vacations. I usually spend my vacations here but this was a special thin. and they wanted me to come so I went."

Before he could get up, gusts from a tornado pulled him from his bed and slammed him against a wall, he said. Debris from their destroyed roof had fallen on his wife he said. Luckily neither were seriously injured.
